lthough
located in P.E.I., this three-story house has
a New England Cape feeling.
It employs the full-Cape design with center entry
and staircase, and overlooks the Northumberland
Strait at Sundance Cove. Both the roof and exterior
side walls of the house are clad with western
red cedar shingles.
Interior features include a hand-crafted pine
kitchen; a bookcase/fireplace wall incorporating
custom built bookcases, alcoves, and mantle in
the Georgian style; custom wood shutters on the
windows built to a Rob Roy Builder’s design;
and throughout, hardwood floors atop in-floor
heat. The masonry for fireplace and flues is in
the traditional English style. There is a walk-out
basement on the water side that is home to a big
games room and family room with in-floor heat.
To minimize noise, the furnace room and mechanical
room were located underneath the garage floor.
Carl Hansen's
Experience
My
wife Lynne and I had a set of plans to start with,
but in agreement with Rob and Pat, made many changes
along the way. There was never a hassle in making
these changes. They had good ideas, thoughts,
and suggestions — and could access a wide
variety of materials. They knew where to go to
get special things made, and had helpful contacts.
Regarding moldings, for example, Rob immediately
knew where to go to have a molding form made to
suit our needs exactly. In addition, he had relationships
with top talent in the various sub trades.
We have no complaints. We are very happy with
the workmanship — it’s excellent,
there’s no question. Our dollar value is
there, too; in both product and service. Rob spent
a lot of personal time running around to different
places, making sure that we got what we wanted.
He was attentive to the job and cared about it
— it was very important to him. Not only
was he trying to please us by having a good product,
he was trying to please himself.
Right
from day one we had trust. We found Rob and Pat
very caring and had a lot of confidence that what
they suggested would be right. Lynn and I would
come up with various ideas and ask them if they
would work. Some would, some wouldn’t. But
with their knowledge and background they were
able to make decisions on changes quickly and
efficiently. We couldn’t have been any happier
with the finished product and the suggestions
that got us there.
